Thomas Holton
The Lams of Ludlow Street
Chinese-American photographer Thomas Holton was granted a unique, ten-year insight into the life of an immigrant family.
As the family’s dynamics evolve, so too does the layout of the images — from Holton’s tentative initial approach and the chaotic childhood days of the youngest, to the inevitable drifting apart as the children grow, and finally to a calm, reflective view of the past. The door of the Lam family, which opened so often to Holton, is not only featured on the cover but also physically opens for the reader thanks to the Swiss binding. The bright red cover, with its golden embossing, evokes the Chinese tradition of »hongbao« gift envelopes.
Winning title PDN Photo Annual 2016
Published by Kehrer Verlag // Texts: Charles Traub, Bonnie Yochelson // Half cloth hardcover, 96 pages, 28 x 22 cm // ISBN 978-3-86828-621-2
